Cyclists should definitely stay in the left hand lane all of the time

Cyclists are cunts.

Forever cycling in packs, thus not allowing you to pass them and holding you up. Forever jumping red lights as you walk across the road almost taking you clean out, and literally just not stopping at roundabouts and then screaming and shouting at the motorists who almost wiped them out as if it's their faults.

Cunts, the lot of them.

... Therefore sometimes they will put more importance on conforming to social norms than on looking after número uno.

An example of this that I've seen a few times is a woman concentrating more on waving thanks for letting her out than on actually driving safely

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Yes then the solution is to have the boxes for cyclists then (obviously only works if drivers leave it free). If there's a car in the box then I will sit in front of the car, basically on the pedestrian crossing.

Re the women thing - women are much more 'social' creatures. From an early age they are much more focused on acting in a way that eases social interaction. An example of this is how they will say to each other "oh you're hair looks lovely" when it actually looks shit.

Apparently 28% of cyclists on London's roads are female, but are 80% of the deaths. That's a massive disparity.

"A bloke however will think 'fuck this for a game', "

That's definitive statement for me. I think that way of thinking that is mostly peculiar to men explains a lot about why men do better at some jobs or earn more money (or in this case, die less in cycling incidents).

A lot of women are schooled into accepting their lot while men will at least try and fight it first. Obviously each approach has it's ups and downs but sometimes rather than looking at everything as sexism we need to look at how men and women are taught how to react and behave in society.

It was me who wrote about jumping the lights. OTB is essentially right. Think about approaching a busy junction almost in the gutter as a lot of riders do, and you get to the front of the queue but there's a tipper truck along side you to your right. You really don't know if he's seen that you're in his blind spot or he's decided to go left or whatever.

Women (the report found) are more likely to assume the tipper driver can see them and even if they can't there's nothing they can do about it anyway. They're at the front and the light is red.

A bloke however will think 'fuck this for a game', wait until the pedestrian light goes out and then jump the light (but won't zoom off in case a car jumps the other light as it turns to red) so he's got a bit of momentum to get up to speed and more importantly, he's then sure the truck driver has seen the back of his head as he's moved off.

Gav - those boxes are usually filled with buses, white vans or black cabs. They all seem to think they can ignore that particular law.
Occasionally see plod enforcing them, but not often enough.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Staggered lights seem like a good idea although that is in place at Bow roundabout and was one of the contributing factors to the deaths there.

Apparently there are two sets of lights and cyclists were going through both sets when only the first set had gone green.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Or as a cyclist you get to the front of the waiting traffic. There's usually designated space to do so. If you can't do that stay as far as you can from lorries and buses.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
That would work for me, but I can't see drivers going for it. And I am a driver primarily - I've hardly cycled since breaking my wrist, for various reasons.

That's essentially what many cyclists do now, just unofficially. As it stands I couldn't give a fuck about fracturing a rule to ensure my safety.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
OTB - isn't the solution at dangerous junctions to have lights staggered for bikes to give them that head start?

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
In short, by jumping the light, you're getting out from under the wheels of cars/lorries as they pull away.

I only ride on local roads, but I do it when necessary - it's vital. I'd never go so early that I'd be in amongst traffic crossing my lane, or pedestrians crossing the road though - that's just replacing the risk with another.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Someone earlier posted that the one of the reasons more women are killed is because they won't jump a red light even when it's required. I've been trying to figure this out and can't, could someone elaborate?
